Project Description

Dancing the Death Drill is a novel based on and inspired by the sinking of the SS Mendi. The troopship was carrying around 900 South Africans – most of them black men – who were on their way to France when it collided with a commercial vessel on 21 February 1917. But the story goes beyond the sinking of the ship. It seeks to explore the human tragedy: why these black men enlisted in a war that was not their own. It also explores the lives of those who survived. Indeed, the entire book is the story of Pitso Motaung, one of the survivors.
